The World Health Organization notes that asthma affects about
300 million people in all countries around the world regardless of
development although most deaths occur in lower income
countries.

Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the air passages that
lead to and from the lungs that makes breathing difficult, which
results in a temporary narrowing of the passages that carry
oxygen to the lungs. Asthma cannot be cured, but can be
controlled.

The goals of asthma control are:

  • No coughing.
  • No difficulty breathing, wheezing, or chest-tightness.
  • No waking up at night because of asthma symptoms.
  • Normal activities, including play, sports, exercise, or other
    school and day care activities.
  • No acute episodes of asthma that require a doctor visit,
emergency room visit, or urgent care.
  • No absences from school or activities.
  • No missed time from work or other activities for the parent
    or caregiver.
  • Normal (or near normal) lung function.

Is this you? Is this your child?

If not, do something about it today! Talk with your doctor or
asthma specialist about getting control through:

Using Inhaled Corticosteroids to control persistent asthma.
Assessing asthma severity at the initial visit to determine
what treatment to start to get asthma under control.
Assessing & Monitoring how well controlled your asthma is at
follow-up visits. Your doctor may need to increase or
decrease medicine to keep asthma under control.
Scheduling follow-up visits at periodic intervals, and at least
every six months. And seeing an asthma specialist at least
twice a year.
