Founded in 1984, the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America – Michigan Chapter (AAFA-MI) is a trusted 501(c)(3) nonprofit and proud part of the national AAFA organization, which has been the leading patient group for people with asthma and allergies since 1953.

 

AAFA-MI's mission is to improve quality of life for individuals and communities affected by asthma and allergic diseases through education, training, advocacy, medical management, and environmental greening. The chapter serves Michigan residents of all ages, offering programs designed to advance general health and wellness, improve access to specialty care, assess home environments, and promote asthma self-management education.

 

With a long history of partnering with local and national organizations, AAFA-MI has developed programs that benefit the public by reducing exposure to environmental triggers and providing evidence-based education — work that was recognized by the national AAFA office with a Chapter Innovation Award.

 

On the advocacy front, AAFA-MI supports public policies at both the federal and state levels — including regulatory actions — that protect the health and safety of those living with asthma and allergies. The chapter has been particularly vocal about the disproportionate burden of air pollution on vulnerable and underserved Michigan communities — especially in urban areas, where decades of inequitable environmental policies and industrial pollution have created conditions that severely worsen health outcomes for residents already managing asthma and allergic diseases.
